PEEK Metal Detectable Rod

Polyetheretherketone

PEEK modified so a shed fragment trips the metal detector the line already runs, in a blue that is not a food colour so it also shows to optical inspection. 500F continuous service. The maker says the additives suit food contact but publishes no FDA letter - ask before quoting.

  • Metal detectable PEEK is modified so that a chip or a broken fragment is picked up by the metal detector a food or pharmaceutical line already runs, instead of passing into product. The blue colour is deliberate too - it is not a colour found in food, so it shows up to optical inspection and to the eye. Tensile strength is 14,500 psi at yield and 16,100 psi at break on a 624,000 psi modulus, flexural strength 24,100 psi on a 638,000 psi flexural modulus, melting point 649F and glass transition 289F, with continuous service at 500F and short excursions to 572F.

It is machined into guides, star wheels, wear strips, scrapers, bushings and conveyor and filling-machine components for food processing, beverage filling, packaging, paper machinery and pharmaceutical work. Moisture pickup is 0.02% in 24 hours and the flammability rating is UL 94 V-0. Two things to be precise about. The manufacturer states that the additives are suitable for food contact but does not publish an affirmative FDA or EU 10/2011 compliance claim for the grade - if your customer needs the letter, ask before quoting. And the detectable filler is not named in the literature, so none is named here. A separate grade adds X-ray detectability as well; this one is detectable by metal detection.
