Polycarbonate Sheet

Polycarbonate sheet is the toughest transparent glazing material in common use - roughly 250 times more impact resistant than glass and 30 times more than acrylic, at half the weight of glass. That extraordinary toughness is why it dominates applications where breakage means injury or liability: it absorbs heavy impact without shattering, and when it finally does fail, it yields rather than producing dangerous shards. Polycarbonate transmits approximately 86% of visible light, carries a broad service temperature range from well below freezing to about 240°F, and is inherently flame retardant with UL 94 V-0 and ASTM E84 Class A ratings in standard grades. UV-stabilized grades resist yellowing through years of outdoor exposure.

Polycarbonate is specified for machine guards and safety shields, security and detention glazing, skylights and architectural glazing, greenhouse and canopy panels, transit shelters and vehicle windows, riot shields and protective barriers, sports facility and hockey rink glazing, equipment covers, and signage faces. Unlike acrylic, it cold-bends to tight radii without heating, drills and cuts without cracking or chipping, and tolerates the flexing and fastener stress that would crack a brittle material — a genuine advantage in field fabrication. Two limits matter: uncoated polycarbonate scratches easily and clouds with repeated cleaning, so specify an abrasion resistant (AR1 or AR2) grade for surfaces that get handled or washed, and it is vulnerable to stress crazing from incompatible cleaners, solvents, and adhesives, so verify chemical compatibility before selecting sealants and cleaning products.
