Thin PEEK is produced by calendering - the polymer is drawn between heated precision rollers into flat stock of even thickness and smooth surface, which is the only practical way to get high-performance polymer in these gauges with usable flatness. Stock runs .040" to 3/16" in seven gauges, in sizes from 12"x12" to 24"x48". Above that, extruded or compression moulded TECAPEEK® plate is the right product, and it is markedly more expensive per pound to machine down than to buy near-net.
Thin calendered PEEK is specified where the service conditions rule out everything cheaper: gaskets, seal faces, backup rings, insulating washers and shims, valve discs, wear pads and thermal or electrical barriers in semiconductor wet-bench and process equipment, aerospace, oil and gas, chemical processing, and sterilisable medical and laboratory hardware. It holds mechanical properties at temperatures where acetal and nylon are long gone, resists steam and repeated autoclaving, and is chemically near-inert. Parts are usually punched or die-cut; at these gauges that is far cheaper than machining PEEK plate.
Unfilled PEEK, keeping the toughness that filled grades trade away
30 percent elongation at break, well above the filled grades
Continuous service to 480°F with short excursions near 572°F
16,000 psi tensile strength at yield, 650,000 psi tensile modulus
Water absorption 0.03 percent keeps machined parts stable in steam
Inherently flame retardant - UL 94 V-0, and RoHS compliant
Resists most chemicals and tolerates high-energy radiation
Calendered thin sheet - punches, shears and die-cuts cleanly
