TECARAN® ABS Plate

Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene
Tough, rigid and easy to machine, ABS stock shapes deliver 5.3 ft-lb/in notched Izod and a clean machined finish at a fraction of the cost of higher-temperature engineering plastics. A practical choice for fixtures, housings, prototypes and trim wherever service stays below about 160°F.

  • TECARAN® ABS is an amorphous terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, supplied as extruded stock shapes for machining. It balances toughness against rigidity better than most commodity thermoplastics: notched Izod impact is 5.3 ft-lb/in, tensile strength at yield is 5,500 psi and tensile modulus is 350,000 psi, with 25% elongation at break. Heat deflection temperature is 200°F at 66 psi and 177°F at 264 psi, and long-term service temperature is 160°F. Water absorption is low at 0.17% in 24 hours and 0.70% at saturation, so machined parts stay dimensionally predictable indoors.

Engineers reach for it in appliance and electronics housings, automotive interior trim, mirror mounts and handle assemblies, machine guarding, and jigs, fixtures and functional prototypes where a tough, stable, inexpensive block is what the job needs. It is resistant to gamma and X-ray exposure. ABS machines cleanly with standard tooling, thermoforms readily, and bonds well with cyanoacrylates, two-component epoxies and structural acrylics. The UL 94 rating is HB. Limitations are real: it is not for sustained heat above its service rating, it yellows and embrittles under UV outdoors, and it is attacked by ketones, esters and chlorinated solvents.
